Fur - An Imaginary Portrait Of Diane Arbus

Synopsis:
A biopic about the life of photographer Diane Arbus, considered one of the most mysterious, enigmatic, and frighteningly bold artists of the 20th century. Most known for her obsession with 'freak' subject-matter, her haunting work emerged from a deeply private place. Arbus' death was as mysteriously tragic as was the aura surrounding some of her most piercing portraits.

Well, it prompted me to follow on the movie to discover who this protaganist is, to beautifully illustrate such a wonderfully scripted story.
here's what was obtained from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Arbus

After separating from her husband, Arbus studied and worked extensively as a photojournalist, her photos appearing in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and Sunday Times magazines, among others.
Arbus' early work was created using 35mm cameras, but by the 1960s Arbus adopted the Rolleiflex medium format twin-lens reflex. This format provided a square aspect ratio, higher image resolution, and a waist-level viewfinder that allowed Arbus to connect with her subjects in ways that a standard eye-level viewfinder did not. Arbus also experimented with the use of flashes in daylight, allowing her to highlight and separate her subjects from the background.
From the period of 1963 to 1970, Arbus continued to receive excellent reviews and rewards for her outstanding works, that included many photography awards.

In July 1971, Arbus ended her own life in Greenwich Village, at the age of 48 by ingesting a large quantity of barbiturates and then cutting open her wrists. Rumors held that she photographed her suicide, but no photos were discovered by the police.
Arbus is remembered today for her photographs depicting outsiders, such as tranvestites, dwarves, giants, prostitutes, and ordinary citizens in poses and settings conveying a disturbing uncanniness. In various aspects, it may be deemed as a work of art, while some critics claim that Arbus' voyeuristic approach demeaned her subjects.

Back to the movie, it was a slow and deeply emotional story-telling that kept me enthralled to the wonderfully watchable Nicole, and the scene-stealing performance of Robert Downey Jr. The mystical and fantastic quality of the characters (such as Robert's portrayal of the man whose hair cannot never stop growing from all over his body) added some magical effect to the story.

It is such a beautiful movie to watch, seeing the great angles that the director adopted to allow the audience to observe the lady protaganist with such intensity and feel her excat emotions as the scene moves the story. Quite good direction, although not the director's best. But, it is obvious that he loves all his leading ladies in his movies. (Just as it was Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary)
The movie asked me to investigate, what and who do I regard as "freaks" in my world and scoiety. Are people, who are different from what you are, the people you choose to hate? Or do you hate the people who chooses to love somebody more similar to themselves, rather than you?

An Open Mind is necessary to fully understand what the movie really wanted to say for itself, and how the audience can appreciate the beauty of the different people in the world, that makes it so beautiful, as it is today.

Are you ready to accept people that are different from youself? Think about that...

Babel

Babel

Main Entry: Ba·bel Pronunciation: 'bA-b&l, 'ba-Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Hebrew BAbhel, from Akkadian bAb-ilu gate of god
1 : a city in Shinar where the building of a tower is held in Genesis to have been halted by the confusion of tongues
2 often not capitalized a : a confusion of sounds or voices b : a scene of noise or confusion

Picture of the Tower of Babel

64th Annual Golden Globes Awards 2007

Doing this blog post as I'm watching Golden Globes 2007, giving my 2cents worth lah!

The 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards 2007 - Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls
What? Her? You have to be kidding me!
Nonetheless, she was dressed to fit the occasion definitely, and she shines from the rest of the nominees. But her win was a surprise to me. Although I have not seen Dreamgirls, it does appears to be the case, that Jennifer's performance is the one that the Globes loves to honour.
Never mind Cate, we'll fight another day.

I liked Emily Blunt (from Devil Wears Prada) Well, she was tensed up and mumbled her way through her lines during her speech. She's young, give her a break and she'll do fine. Keep the performances coming up in her fashion, and we'll see her at the Oscars.
Is she dating Michael Buble?

I cannot seem to be able to surf for pictures taken for the event leh!

Naomi Watts looks awkward but still brilliant in the little sequin number. Getting a little nervy huh? Well, the Babel director's name is tough to pronounce lah.

The trailer for Bobby seems very promising, a multi-talented and star-studded cast. Can't wait. (Except Helen Hunt, who's constantly mis-cast in everything she does)

Best Animated Motion Picture
Cars
Cars is a well deserved win. I've watched all three of the animated motion pictures and Cars does stand out much more than the rest. Well voiced by many artistes well animated, the idea that the votes went to honour is about the important lessons about Life that its about the journey and not the destination.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Musical or Comedy
Meryl Streep - The Devil Wears Prada
A simply entertaining lady to watch even if she does stand-up. She has yet again proved she's the leading lady boss of Hollywood, and this is her award for the year (getting Helen Mirren out of the picture). Miranda Priestly is just the role for her to play, no other. And I loved the way she ended her speech: "That's all. " You'll know why if you share my enjoyment for Devil Why does Sacha look so embaressed by the clips for Borat? Hahahaha.... He funny man.

Toni's looking great today! She seems to be taking the back seat this year as a great supporting actress actually, and she might just have been overlooked in the wrong category. Note: Scene stealer in Night Listener

Rachel has definitely lost all her post-natal baby calories, and ready to pick up from where she left last year. Gorgeous in red, exquisite. Awaiting the Fountain

Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Motion Picture
Eddie Murphy - Dreamgirls
Its difficult to give comments for performances that i have not yet to enjoy, but Eddie's performance is reputedly top-rated and nothing short of fantastic. He could have won in the momentum of Dreamgirls to his advantage. Much preferred Jack to win though, cos he really scared the piss out of me.

Helen is just in a lucky and a well-deserved winning streak this year. She's getting the wonderful credits for playing queens so dramatically perfect.

Oh my Cameron, Its Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs, not Internal Affairs (makes it sound like some sex scandal movie)

As you can tell by now, I am not excatly into American TV. The names would all be unfamiliar to be except those who crossed over and back again. Hahah, celebrate and worship the big screen only.

Abigail Breslin - For Little Miss Sunshine - I love her, although she seems a little bit too grown up now. Bright girl, bright future.

The amazingly-overworked-for-this-year Kate Winslet, looking pretts for the camera. Will she win? i don't think so, its not her year, and she probably wont be awarded for her dilligence.

Best Original Score - The Painted Veil
Another reason to watch this majorly overlooked film. Pity the lack of acting nominations.

Best Screenplay went to The Queen - for an utterlt brilliant and smart piece of fiction. Well, a good strong win, based on the media hype generated for the movie i suppose, with other great nominations in the tailback.

The great win for Clint this year would only be for Iwojima definitely, garnered sufficient hype initially, but he didnt carry it through, unfortunately. A lucky year for the Eastwood franchaise.

there are definitely a lot of other fantastic gals and guys that i have overlooked, but there's just too many fantastic performances this year to not do that. I humbly apologise...

How lovely it is to get these three fantastic actresses to do a cover together! Judi, Meryl and Helen!

Best Director - Motion Picture
Martin Scorsese - The Departed

The crowds have been dying to give the honour to Martin again, but a chance rarely comes by. Since Clint have divided votes for two movies (that should have only been one), Martin deserves his honour this year.
Sigh, another divided year of awards...

Best Actor in a Leading Role - Comedy/Musical
Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat
Well-deservedly given to his honour for this that made another triumphant mark in comedy. Great funny speech for those who watched Borat. Funny!
He is British, mind you, great manners!

Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical
Dreamgirls

More credit to make it a great and watchable movie to look out for. Yes! plenty of dancing and singing will be good for the market of drama-mumble this season.
Same impact that Walk The Line did for last year. Somehow musicals are stronger.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Drama
Helen Mirren - The Queen

She will progress for her Oscar win! Go Helen! Its your year!
As much as i would like to see Kate win this, I know Helen is deserving. Work on hard Kate!

Best Actor in a Leading Role - Drama
Forest Whitaker - The Last King of Scotland
Following the previous awards given to Forest, this should be a good movie to look out for. Not that the rest of the nominees lost, they all had sufficient to gain I'm sure. the script worked for the african artistes for the past years, and this year just continued the tradition.

Best Motion Picture - Drama
Babel
I dunno what to say man. haha. havent seen this but im sure now i have a lot to look forward to.

to put up a picture for my profile

Apocalypto

I have been seeing the movie trailer for more than a few time in the cinema by now. Apocalypto has gathered so much hype and media tension, that it has increased its watchability by many fold (including the personal social comments that the director like to give)

The most interesting thing about it would probably be that it is a cast of unknown actors (all sourced from Mexico City) whom I read that they played out the story and performed brilliantly, for first-timers. This is largely celebrated by Hollywood critics for making the effort to create the most "original" movie ever, when you can not even recognise a single actor, and taking in only their acting, the plot shifts and the story telling.
Well, Ii shouldn't be commenting too much on the movie, becos i have yet to see it. Come next tuesday, after the 1003 screening, I will do a full update! Regarding what I think of the movie and things like that. Woo Hoo! Everybody loves free movies!

电影 Stranger than Fiction

This is a story about a man named Harold Crick and his wristwatch. In her story.

Hmmm...

Or rather, Harold's life is in the hands and under the pen of severely deranged and writer-blocked author Kay. Ouch.

Imagine that, you are powerless about your own life, and everything you do, learn, feel, behave, say, breathe and etc, is controlled by an unknown power, that annoyingly narrates to you from an elevated angle, over and over about what you are doing at the very instant. Freaky, eh?

p/s 1 - look at the banner over the shop window and read it aloud to yourself now.

And when Harold meets the smart, intelligent, rebellious, tax-evading, pretty, tattoo-adorned, loud-mouth and completely irresistable Ana, a wonderful baking girl with a gorgeous cafe of a bakery, Love happens...

"It feels as natural as milk and cookies"

But as the tragic hero realises his ultimate fate, what is to become of him? What would you do, if you only have less than 1 day to live, know you will die, and the way you die from the person who simply decided that you have to. Would you face it bravely or would you run away?

Examine your own life now. Are you simply living it the way that the tide is moving up and down the shoreline, and the sun and moon switch places in the sky?
Or, perhaps, you should live it like the wind changes and the comets fall ablaze?

p/s 2 - these are not lines from the movie. Please read them and understand them

Have you ever tried sitting on a bus service and not getting off, watching the scenary, breathing the air breeze, reading your favourite from cover to cover and looking at the people you normally wouldn't raise your eyes at?

Have you ever tried to walk to the places that you've always wanted to visit but never went, and treating the visit like you will never be able to come back again?

Stranger Than Fiction is this little gem of a small movie that will make you investigate your own life that you are living in right now. And, its time for a change. Because, change in life, will not make you strange, but keeps you alive and not to live it any less different or similar, and fully worthwhile.
